Little City Five: Helen Ellis

Helen Ellis is coming to read on November 17th. The day after the election, we had a few questions for her:

1. Sorry, it's the morning after, I have to. Can you, as a Southerner and a New Yorker, say anything about the election that will make me feel better?

Alas I cannot.

2. I mean, why?

There's truth in fiction: our country is now a reality game show.

3. OK, back to your wonderful book! We've sold a lot of it. Did you get cover approval? So glad they didn't change it for paperback. How many of these women are specific people you know?

Thank you and hooray! Yes, I got cover approval. I saw one cover and it was love at first sight. I could not approve it fast enough. I'm also very happy that they kept it for the paperback.

In regards to the wives in AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE, all of these women are specific to me. But, I think we all have as part of our personalities the power to be: the extreme hostess with the mostest, a captive-turned-queen of her castle, and a savior of little lost girls.

4. Please name three favorite books: one from childhood, one from teenage years, and one from adulthood.

Childhood: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

Teenage Years: Scruples by Judith Krantz

Adulthood: 11/22/63 by Stephen King

5. What comes to mind when you hear the word Hoboken?

Legalized internet poker.
