To celebrate the launch of Ava Reid’s debut novel, THE WOLF AND THE WOODSMAN, she is joined by celebrated authors Alix Harrow (The Once and Future Witches) and R.F. Kuang (The Poppy War trilogy) to discuss Nationalism within the Fantasy genre.  The authors will discuss ethnic nationalism and nation-building and what that means for those who don’t fit within the norms laid out by the nation-state.  The authors will discuss how myth and folklore are shaped by the prevailing voice of the moment and how the perpetual repeating of “fairytales” reiterates harmful stereotypes.

Ava Reid was born in Manhattan and raised right across the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey, but currently lives in Palo Alto. She has a degree in political science from Barnard College, focusing on religion and ethnonationalism. She has worked for a refugee resettlement organization, for a U.S. senator, and, most recently, for an AI robotics startup. The Wolf and the Woodsman is her first novel.

Alix E. Harrow is an ex-historian currently living in Kentucky with her husband and their semi-feral children. She won a Hugo for her short fiction and debut novel, THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY, was a nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, World Fantasy, and Goodreads Choice Awards. Her second novel, THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES, was named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR Books.

Rebecca F. Kuang is a Marshall Scholar, Chinese-English translator, and the Astounding Award-winning and Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award nominated author of the Poppy War trilogy. Her work has won the Crawford Award and the Compton Crook Award for Best First Novel. She has an MPhil in Chinese Studies from Cambridge and an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from Oxford; she is now pursuing a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale.
